I rode the entire trail in late May 2025 from Phoenix Park in Eau Claire north to Brunet Island State park and back. Just north of Eau Claire there are quite a few tarred cracks running across the trail for a mile or two of not so pleasant riding. Just south of Cornell there are some well marked frost heaves that are easily negotiated. Overall great trail that I rate 4.9999 stars. Traveling cyclist Facebook
The trail between Luck and Frederic is all loose gravel and rocks. Very soft. Maybe okay for a fat tire bike. May 29, 2025.
Fun smooth trail. Nicely paved. Great for biking. I would love to go back!!
Wonderful sunny fall day. Joined the north section of the trail at 494 bridge and headed south. A number of new/repaired path areas made the ride smooth going. Great sights with leaves fallen.
Thank you so much for the clean and safe bathrooms in the Pine Bend Bluff parking lot.
I was surprised to discover at the end of the trail was brand new pavement that connected the north and south sections together. The new paved trail was wide and included a tunnel. The trail brings you into the Bison area of the park.
Thank you Dakota County leadership.
My ride ended up with delicious lunch downtown Hastings.
As other reviewers have said, this is NOT a bike friendly state trail. I live in Mondovi about 1/3 mile from the trail head and have learned that some of the worst loose sand is in the first mile heading east. However, after having bought a "fat bike" with 4 1/2 " tires, this is very ridable. I personally avoid riding on weekends due to the ATV traffic. It would also be nice to have more public parking along the route.
Can be windy on the bridges, don’t lose your head gear. I prefer to walk against traffic heading into Wisconsin from 36, and decline into Stillwater from Wisconsin.
We have done the Buffalo trail in the past but today we did our favorite section-parked in Fairchild lot, went to Osseo and back. Beautiful day. Trail in decent condition. Some potholes and puddles. Ranged from gravel to sandy surfaces. Beautiful forest to drive through. Places to stop and get fuel/eat if necessary.
We started in Almena on a gorgeous Tuesday in September. We were on a two up ATV. Went to Amery and back. Then did part of the extension in Barron Co to the 40 acre ATV Playground. Nice conditions on trail and groomed alongside. Pleasant varied scenery with several bridges. Lakes, rivers, bogs, woods, farmland. Can definitely understand why it is named Cattail trail! We stopped for a lunch in Turtle Lake at the Hotel Bar & Grill. Nice place right off the trail.
The day was perfect for biking and this trail made it even better. Variety of landscapes; bison preserve, farmland, woodlands and river views. Majority of trail was very smooth and clean.
